YAZ/Yasmin/Ocella

YAZ

Information Provided by a Mississippi Medical Malpractice Lawyer

YAZ (manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc.) is a relatively new oral birth control medicine billed as a "miracle pill," which in addition to warding off unwanted pregnancy, packs the added benefits of treating moderate acne and premenstrual discord disorder ("PMDD"). These added benefits and differing drug formulations and dosage administration schedules distinguish YAZ from the similarly-named oral contraceptive "Yasmin." Ocella, the generic form of yasmin, is manufactured by Barr Laboratories, Inc.

Nonetheless, until October 2008, both YAZ and Yasmin were marketed similarly, and on October 3, 2008, the FDA's Division of Drug Marketing, Advertising, and Communication sent a letter to Bayer stating that "the (YAZ) TV ads are misleading because they broaden the drugs indication, overstate the efficacy of YAZ and minimize serious risks associated with the use of the drug." Also, of paramount concern among public safety officials, is the extent to which the YAZ ads downplayed the risks the compound presents in certain high-risk individuals related to blood clotting and deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or Factor V Leiden, which is a blood clot located in one of the body's deep vein or any type of blood clot that travels to a lung (referred to as a pulmonary embolism or PE). Women who have suffered from problems relating to these "fourth generation" combination birth control pills have been increasingly coming forward to report their injuries, such as the following serious side effects:

  • Blood Clots
  • Stroke
  • Heart Attack
  • Gallbladder Disease
  • Pancreatitis
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
  • Venous Thromboembolism
  • Liver Tumors
  • Death
